Apple Health
Progress reads from Apple Health to show steps, sleep, recovery and weight, and writes your manual weigh-ins and your recorded runs, walks and rides back. Each connection is a separate permission you grant from the screen that uses it. Nothing Progress reads from Apple Health is uploaded unless it is data you have consented to sync, and steps, sleep and recovery scores never leave the phone.
What Progress reads
| Screen | Read from Apple Health |
|---|---|
| Weight | Body weight samples, so weigh-ins from a smart scale or another app show up |
| Steps | Step count, by day and by hour |
| Recovery | Sleep, heart rate variability, resting heart rate, active energy |
| Personal information | Date of birth, biological sex and height, to pre-fill the form; saved only when you confirm |
Because every wearable writes to Apple Health, an Oura ring, Garmin or any other watch feeds the Recovery and Steps screens with no extra setup.
What Progress writes
- Weight, when you turn on Sync with Apple Health under Settings → Apple Health. Manual weigh-ins in Progress are then saved to Health too.
- Runs, walks and rides recorded on the phone are saved as workouts in Apple Health, with their route. A cardio block inside a workout is saved as its own workout too.
- Workouts and cardio recorded on Apple Watch are saved as workouts in Apple Health by the watch, with heart rate.
Strength workouts you log on the phone are not written to Apple Health yet. That is coming. Importing workouts you record in other apps is planned too.
Turning it on
- Open the screen that needs it, for example the Steps card on the Personal tab, the Recovery card, or Settings → Apple Health for weight.
- Grant the categories iOS asks for. Depending on the screen, iOS asks when you open it, when you tap its connect button, or, for recordings, when you tap Start.
- If a screen stays empty, Apple Health may have denied the read without telling the app. Open the iOS Settings app → Health → Data Access & Devices → Progress and check each category.
Progress never asks for Health permissions at launch or from the background. It asks only when you use something that needs Apple Health.
What it does not do
- It does not read workouts from other apps into your history. Sessions recorded elsewhere stay in Apple Health.
- It does not upload steps, sleep, heart rate variability or resting heart rate. Those numbers are computed on your phone each time you open the screen.
- It does not import Apple Health data into your account when you reinstall. Apple Health itself keeps that history.
